Marie Curie

Marie Curie was one of the greatest scientists in modern history and one of the very few figures who changed both scientific knowledge and the public meaning of who could belong in science. Born in Warsaw, Poland, she later moved to Paris to continue her education under extremely difficult circumstances. Together with Pierre Curie, she investigated radiation from uranium compounds, advanced the study of radioactivity, and discovered the elements polonium and radium. Her work did far more than identify new elements. She created rigorous methods for isolating radioactive substances and helped prove that the atom was not an indivisible, permanent unit, a discovery that reshaped physics and chemistry. Curie won two Nobel Prizes, one in Physics and one in Chemistry, becoming the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and the first person ever to win in two different scientific fields. During World War I, she also promoted mobile X-ray units that improved the treatment of wounded soldiers near the front. Her contribution to the world was profound: she helped launch nuclear science, transformed medical imaging and cancer treatment, and broke major barriers for women in research. Her life remains a powerful example of science used in service of humanity.
