Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking was one of the best-known theoretical physicists of the modern era, and he played a major role in bringing deep cosmological questions into public conversation. Born in Oxford, England, he showed remarkable talent in mathematics and physics and later spent much of his academic life at Cambridge. Although he was diagnosed at a young age with ALS and gradually lost most of his physical mobility, he continued to produce influential work in theoretical physics. One of his major achievements, developed with Roger Penrose and others, was advancing singularity theorems that showed how general relativity points toward extreme limits in black holes and the early universe. His most famous contribution was the idea now called Hawking radiation, which suggested that black holes are not completely closed objects but can slowly emit radiation because of quantum effects. This insight brought gravity, quantum theory, and thermodynamics into direct tension and helped shape later efforts toward a deeper unified theory. Beyond research, Hawking reached millions of readers through books such as *A Brief History of Time*. He expanded not only scientific understanding, but also public curiosity about the universe, time, and existence itself.
