Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the defining leaders of the American civil rights movement and one of the most important global heirs to the tradition of nonviolent resistance. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he grew up in the Black church tradition, received formal theological training, and was deeply influenced by Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence. After Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955, the Montgomery Bus Boycott brought King into national leadership. He advocated peaceful protest, boycotts, public speech, moral discipline, and legal reform as tools to end segregation and secure equal rights for Black Americans in voting, education, work, and public life. In 1963, during the March on Washington, he delivered the "I Have a Dream" speech, one of the most enduring public speeches in modern democratic history. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. King's contribution to the world was not only political but moral: he showed that civil rights are inseparable from human dignity and justice. He helped change American law, but he also changed global expectations about what organized citizens can demand from an unjust society. He is remembered not only as an orator, but as a disciplined leader who transformed conscience into collective action.
