Biography
Mother Teresa was one of the most globally recognized humanitarian and religious service figures of the twentieth century. Born in Skopje, she joined a Catholic religious order as a young woman, moved to India, and eventually began her long work in Kolkata among the poor, the sick, the dying, and those abandoned by society. The organization she founded, the Missionaries of Charity, grew into an international network serving orphans, the homeless, the seriously ill, people with leprosy, and others living in extreme poverty. What the world remembers most about Mother Teresa is not a political program or a large theory, but her constant insistence that every neglected person should be treated as a full human being with dignity. Her work pushed the suffering of the poorest into global public view and helped draw attention to care, companionship, hospice work, and service at the most basic human level. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Although some aspects of her legacy are discussed critically today, her central contribution remains clear: she made compassion visible, actionable, and persistent, and encouraged millions of people to see service to the vulnerable as a moral calling rather than a passing emotion.
